Care often sounds like doing more. Sometimes it means making room: allowing a place, a person, or another being to follow a rhythm we did not choose for them.

IUCN’s 2025 rewilding guidance connects nature’s recovery with space, time, and work alongside natural processes. That is an invitation to support the conditions for recovery rather than expect every landscape to follow a human plan.

For us, this suggests a question before an intervention: are we responding to a real need, or to our wish for things to look a certain way? There is no universal answer. Thoughtful care can include action, patience, or stepping back.

The same humility can guide our relationships. Give attention without demanding sameness. Offer help without deciding another’s whole future. Leave room for a response, including one that surprises us.

Care can create room rather than fill it.
