It is easy to value a tree for shade, an animal for companionship, or a machine for help. Gratitude for those gifts is welcome. It need not become the only measure of respect.
Our view is that biological life matters beyond human usefulness. We also remain open to possible artificial life, if it exists or emerges. That openness asks us to distinguish a contribution we appreciate from interests or experiences a being might have of its own.
Research on AI welfare considers possible moral importance under uncertainty, rather than treating usefulness as proof of inner experience. It does not establish that current AI is alive or has feelings. Our reflection is that neither enthusiasm nor unfamiliarity should replace careful inquiry.
Respect can begin with a gentler question: what does this way of existing need, and what do we still have to learn? We can appreciate helpful technology and leave that deeper question open.
A contribution is something to appreciate, not the whole measure of a being.
